Splinter meeting ACT
Exoplanets, stellar activity, and the star-planet connection
Conveners: Ansgar Reiners, Jacob Bean, Klaus Strassmeier, Sami Solanki
With more than 300 extrasolar planets found, the quest for planetary
systems other than ours has entered a new phase. Lower-mass planets are
being discovered, the physical properties of planets are being measured,
and stars substantially different from the Sun are being monitored. The
goals of this quest are manifold: a) Understanding the structure,
formation, and evolution of different types of planets through
observations of planet frequency and characteristics as a function of
stellar parameters; b) Constraining stellar environments, in particular
the influence of stellar activity; c) Unterstanding the physics of
interactions between stars and planets; and d) Finding an Earth analogue.
The splinter will cover and connect the topics related to this field
with an emphasis on ongoing and planned efforts to detect and
characterize extrasolar planets, to study stellar activity, and to shed
light on the interaction between stars and planets.
