Splinter meeting ELT
The E-ELT: Status, timeline, and instrumentation
Conveners: Dieter Reimers, Thomas Henning, Roberto Gilmozzi, Roland Gredel
Since the end of 2005,
ESO has been working together with the active participation of its user
community, on the definition of the European Extremely
Large Telescope (E-ELT). The project, currently in its detailed
design phase, will provide European astronomers with the largest
optical & near-infrared telescope in the world. The E-ELT is
widely supported within the various European funding agencies. It is
listed as an opportunity
by the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures and has
been ranked as the top priority for future
ground-based astronomical infrastructures by ASTRONET, together with the
SKA. The purpose of this splinter meeting is to introduce the status
and the present timeline of the project to the wider German community,
to present the ongoing phase-A instrumentation studies, and to discuss
present views about how instruments for the E-ELT can be actually
realized.
