Prof. Dr. Maria-Rosa Cioni

Maria-Rosa Cioni is an expert on near-infrared observations and studies of stellar populations in galaxies of the Local Group. She is the Principal Investigator of the VISTA survey of the Magellanic Clouds system (VMC; http://star.herts.ac.uk/~mcioni/vmc/), a public survey project of the European Southern Observatory (ESO) being awarded about 2000 hours of observing time. She is leading a 4MOST 4MOST consortium survey on the Magellanic Clouds and co-leading guaranteed-time observations of the Clouds with MOONs. She is also a member of LSST and Euclid consortia.

After graduating in astronomy from the University of Bologna (Italy) in 1996, she obtained her PhD degree in astronomy at the University of Leiden (The Netherlands) in 2001. She was an ESO fellow in Garching from 2001 to 2005 and then a lecturer at the University of Edinburgh (UK) until 2007. Then, she moved to the University of Hertfordshire (UK) as a Senior Lecturer where she was subsequently promoted to Reader in Astronomy. She returned to Germany with a  Humboldt Fellowship for experience researchers in 2010. In 2015 and 2016, she was a DAAD visiting Professor at the University of Potsdam. At present, she is a joint Professor between the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam and the University of Potsdam. She is leading a research group funded by an ERC consolidator grant on the study of stellar populations of the Magellanic Clouds. Since 2015, Cioni is the German representative in the ESO User Committee.
