Convective processing of fossil magnetic fields in proto-Ap-stars
Field emerging on Ap star      The Tayler instability may deliver magnetic fields reminiscent of the one observed on Ap stars. This simlation starts from a dipolar field and follows the evolution of a perturbation with time. The colors show the strength of the radial field component at the stellar surface. The fields do not evolve anymore at a later stage - as observed. The patterns move because we see the star rotating.
Fossil field processing      Ap stars are believed to host fossil magnetic fields. During the early phase of star formation, a convective processing is likely in these stars. The film shows the processing of an initially vertical magnetic field and what is left when the convection has receded to a very thin outer shell.
3D view of processed field      The resulting magnetic field in the future Ap star when the remaining convection zone covers only thin layer at the top. The films shows magnetic fields lines (nothing to do with flux tubes!) from different perspectives.
