The AIP - structure of the institute

The Astrophysikalisches Institut Potsdam (AIP) is a research institute with two main directions of research activity:

  • Cosmic Magnetic Fields, Solar- and Stellar Activity (Department I)
  • Extragalactic Astrophysics and Cosmology (Department II)

    • Both departments consist of research units of common topics. These research units themself consist of the actual working groups.

    The institute administration is technically considered as Department III (Director: Mr. Stolz).
    The Scientific Chairman of the board of directors of the AIP (and also speaker of the board) is Prof. Strassmeier. The Administrative Chairman is Mr. Stolz.
    Above the institute level we have the Board of Trustees (Chair: MinDir Dr. Schmidt) and the Scientific Advisory Committee (Chair: Prof. Rix). Please, check our organigram picture (without any links yet).

    The AIP is divided over three different locations:

    Sternwarte Babelsberg :
    The Observatory in Potsdam-Babelsberg was constructed in 1913; it is the successor of the old Observatory of Berlin founded in 1700; the Observatory main building:     		/^\ /^\
    Astrophysikalisches Observatorium Potsdam: The Potsdam Astrophysical Observatory on the `Telegrafenberg' was founded in 1874. It houses the Solar observatory Einstein-Tower and the Great Refractor /^\ /^\
    The Solar Radio Astronomy observatory in Tremsdorf near Potsdam was founded in 1954 ; Antennas in Tremsdorf: /^\
