The Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP) is once again going to open its doors for this year's Girls' Day/Future Day Brandenburg on 25 April and offering school girls an insight into working at a research institute.

Learn about the work at the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam!

How hot is the sun’s surface? And what is the Milky Way made of? How do you navigate through the night sky? On April 25, 2024, girls will once again have the opportunity to look into the work of an astrophysicist at the Leibniz-Institute for Astrophysics (AIP) as part of Girls’ Day/Future Day Brandenburg. Girls between the age of 11 and 16 who are interested in the subjects of physics, mathematics or computer science will get to know the AIP campus from 9 am to 2 pm, visit our telescopes and learn more about the importance of spectral analysis for astronomy. During the hands-on activity “Constellations in 3D”, participants will be able to discover the fascinating world of astronomy on their own.

What can you expect?

  • Get to know an astrophysics institute, visit our telescopes and our laboratories.
  • Discover Time: see our galaxy in virtual reality.
  • Make your own constellations in 3D.
  • Take the opportunity to meet AIP scientists and ask your questions.

The key areas of research at the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP) are cosmic magnetic fields and extragalactic astrophysics. A considerable part of the institute's efforts aims at the development of research technology in the fields of spectroscopy, robotic telescopes, and E-science. The AIP is the successor of the Berlin Observatory founded in 1700 and of the Astrophysical Observatory of Potsdam founded in 1874. The latter was the world's first observatory to emphasize explicitly the research area of astrophysics. The AIP has been a member of the Leibniz Association since 1992.
