Solar Radio Physics

The solar corona is the outermost layer of the solar atmosphere. During a flare a large amount of energy is released in a very short time ranging from tens of seconds up to a few hours. These processes can be investigated by solar radio and X-ray observations. Therefore the workgroup operates a LOFAR station for measuring the solar radio radiation, and it participates in all important solar related space missions. Furthermore, it has operated the OSRA observatory until 2007. The production of energetic electrons is a fundamental process, which is the main research topic of the workgroup "Solar Radio Physics". Since flares and the related enhanced emissions of cosmic rays influence the Earth and our technological civilisation, the study of space weather is of a global social importance.
