Abstract

The VLT Survey Telescope (VST) project is a cooperation of ESO, the Capodimonte Astronomical Observatory in Naples, Italy, and the European Omegacam Consortium, for the design, realization, installation, and operation at ESO Paranal Observatory in Chile of a 2.6 m aperture, 1 degree x 1 degree wide field imaging facility in the spectral range from UV to I bands. The VST project was proposed to ESO in 1997, the realization started in 1998, and the scientific operation is expected for October 2001. This report summarizes the VST project status as on July 1999.
