Projects of "Europäischer Fonds für regionale Entwicklung" (EFRE)

The eScience Center for Astrophysics at the AIP is partially supported by EFRE.

With the help of EFRE, the AIP has build a 10GBit backbone network for the institute, connecting the clusters and storage servers and the MCC. This is a precondition for using new methods and tools from eScience for processing simulation results or data from telescopes or archives. Storage facilities were built up with more than 100TB, for storing simualtion results and data from instruments and archives, wich are easily accessible by the AIP scientists. Additionally the cluster luise offers capabilities especially for processing huge data sets.

Tha AIP is collaborating with other Potsdam Institutes, especially with AEI. To close a gap in the PMAN, the Potsdam Science network infrastructure, a 10 GB line to AEI was leased, enabling the eScience groups at both AEI and AIP to do research on high speed networks. We host a cluster of AEI at AIP which is accessible via the 10GBit link.

In collaboration of both AEI and AIP, we host one of the D-Grid-Storage Clusters with more than 100TByte storage volume, which is accessible form AEI via the 10GBit link. This cluster is sponsored by BMBF.

The AIP as a member of the GLOW (German Long Wavelength Consortium) is building a remote LOFAR station. LOFAR is wide area sensor network, with its center at the netherlands. For radio astronomy LOFAR is a radio telescope with a diameter of up to 1000 km, consisting of small remote antennae sites, which are connected via high bandwidth network to a central processing site. The location of the remote site has to meet special requirements (radio silence). Located at Bornim, the gap between the site and the entry point to the Potsdam Science network (PMAN) and XWin has to be bridged. This entry point is provided by ATB (Institut für Agrartechnik e.V. Bornim) in the vicinity of the site.
