View of the RAVE first data release. (click to enlarge)

Each point is one RAVE target projected on the night sky. The color coding follows the heliocentric radial velocity. The gradient in colors reflects the motion of the Sun in the Milky Way.

Snapshot of the gas component in a simulation of a disk galaxy formation (click to enlarge)

The simulation is performed using GADGET-2 with radiative cooling only. The figure presents the face-on (left) and face-off (right) view of the gas component. The gaseous disk consists of a compact bar-like component in the middle with 88% of the particles and an extended thin disk component.
