Start of he ULTROS Project with funding from the BMBF Verbundforschung.

          This project is a collaboration with the University of Potsdam, aiming  for the development
          of faint object 3D spectroscopy on the basis of the nod-shuffle technique.

           Flexure Tests at Telescope Simulator in AIP Integration Hall reveal very high stability

           of Field Optics Module (smaller than 0.1 arcsec flexure for slews of +/-45 degrees elevation)

           MPIA  in Heidelberg and AIP  sign agreement to offer PMAS as a common user instrument
            on a shared risk basis at the  Calar Alto  3.5m Telescope. This agreement is valid for a period
            of three years, starting on July 1, 2002.

FIRST (artificial) LIGHT for the PMAS Fiber-Spectrograph ! The Fiber-Spectrograph has been mounted onto the AIP Telescope Simulator and extensive tests have been undertaken to verify the spectrograph performance and image quality. Follow this link for results of the optical performance tests.

The Optical Instrumentation Group moved into the new building for research and technology at the AIP. This building features amongst the offices, three optical laboratories, an electronic and a detector lab, a Faraday cage, a test and integration hall, a telescope simulator and the workshop. Financial Support for PMAS granted by Verbundforschung:

          The PMAS project has now obtained substantial financial support from the BMBF Ver-
          bundforschung as was confirmed by DESY (through which Verbundforschung projects
          are operated) in a letter dating March 24, 1997. The grant covers costs for parts of the
          hardware and 2 positions (1 scientist, 1 engineer).
