The Scientific Payload and Instrumental Compartment

The scientific payload of the 170 cm telescope, mounted behind the primary mirror comprises the following instruments:

The Science Data Management System onboard controls the scientific payload and provides the interface between the payload and the spacecraft.

The Instrumental Compartment is shown in the figure below: The 170 cm normal incidence telescope feeds light to the entrance slits of the spectrographs. Part of the light is reflected to the sensors of the Fine Guiding System. In an additional observation mode the light is directed - by means of a flat mirror - to the image camera equipped with different filters.
