The XMM Survey Science Centre (SSC) is a consortium of ten European institutions , led by Leicester University (Survey Scientist: Dr. M. G. Watson). Within the XMM project, the SSC has responsibilities to

• develop XMM-Newton Science Analysis Software SAS (jointly with ESA's XMM Science Operations Centre),
• perform a pipe-line processing of all XMM observations
  (the SSC has generated the most comprehensive catalogue of X-ray sources, 2XMMp)
• conduct a follow-up/identification ( XID) programme for the XMM serendipitous X-ray survey.

Within the consortium, AIP has the responsibility to

• provide the source detection software for the pipe-line processing of the XMM EPIC data (in close collaboration with the Max-Planck-Institut für Extraterrestrische Physik)
• take part in the XID programme (e.g. the AIP has triggered the WMM-EIS, the ESO public imaging on XMM-fields, and published the corresponding X-ray images and source lists)
