Dr. Daniel Sablowski

My interests lie in spectroscopic binary star systems and their evolutionary stages. This includes the determination of the orbital parameters and the separation of the spectra by spectral disentangling, as well as chemical analysis.

For the spectral disentangling the software Spectangular was developed. This software allows the separation of the spectra and the derivation of the orbital parameters.

In the optics group of the AIP my main focus is the development of spectroscopic systems. For this purpose I developed the software SILENT for paraxial calculation of important parameters of spectrographs.

Spectangular

Relies on spectra spread over the orbital motion of the components. These n spectra are collected in a vector o, the individual spectra of each component are collected in the solution vector x, and the problem to be solved is

o = Mx

where M is a matrix, reflecting the orbital parameters. The values of these parameters are varied by an optimization algorithm such that the residuum

r = || o - Mx ||

is minimized. Additionally, the code allows to optimize on the individual radial velocities instead of the orbital elements. This allows to work on systems with orbital distortions apart from the two body orbit. However, the code can not determine the flux ratio between the two components. This also depends on the wavelengths and it need to be determined, e.g. from photometric observations (or the equivalent width of the lines may also serve as a criterion). Nevertheless, Spectangular, allows to optimize on the flux ratios as well, but the optimization on the wavelength axis need to be bound to the equation of an SB2 or SB1 system in order to avoid confusion between these two effects.

The software can be downloaded from github.
