The formation of massive galaxies through cosmic time
In my talk I will present results from LCDM simulations and
SAMs on the various different stages that massive galaxies go through on
their way to maturity: At high redshifts z~6 they go through a growth
spurting phase driven by high gas accretion rates and possibly triggered
star formation. This episode is followed by a period in time around z~2
when massive galaxies grow in 'equilibrium' with their cold accretion
rates, before they turn to a phase of growth mostly via mergers. I will
highlight each of these phases and discuss their consequences on the
properties of galaxies.
