Postdoctoral position "Extragalactic Planetary Nebulae"
The Astrophysikalisches Institut Potsdam (AIP) is offering a
postdoctoral position for participating in a project devoted to the
investigation of Extragalactic Planetary Nebulae, both observationally
and theoretically. The successful candidate is expected to prepare
and conduct observational campaigns, and to perform extended
radiation-hydrodynamics simulations in collaboration with the AIP
Stellar Physics Group. The project is linked to the science case for
MUSE, a major 2nd generation VLT instrument, currently being built
with participation from AIP.
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in physics or astronomy, and should have
experience in astronomical observing and expertise in the reduction
and analysis of astronomical data. A good theoretical background in
hydrodynamics and radiative transfer is essential.
The initial appointment is for two years, with a possible extension
for a third year. The salary is based on the regulations for the
German civil service, depending on age and marital status.
The AIP owns excellent (super)computer facilities,
and has access to ESO La Silla/Paranal telescopes, PMAS GTO at Calar
Alto, and others. It is located in Potsdam/Babelsberg at the
southwestern border of Berlin. Both cities host a number of renowned
research institutions and are rich in historical places and buildings;
their cultural scene is outstanding in Germany.
Applications with the usual materials, including curriculum vita and
statement of research interests, should be sent to the address
above. Applicants should arrange three letters of recommendation to be
sent to the same address. Review of applications will begin July 15,
2005, and will continue until the position is filled.
The AIP is an equal opportunity employer and encourages applications
from women.
