MOTIVATION: The STELLA (http://www.aip.de/stella/) robotic observatory was inaugurated in May 2006. The Science Demonstration Time with the SES (Stella Echelle Spectrograph) was also initiated last year and the WIFSIP (Wide Field STELLA Imaging Photometer) will be installed soon. It is anticipated that the STELLA observatory will become fully operational sometime next year. The project is a collaboration between the AIP and the IAC with the AIP having direct access to 75% of the observing time.
Now is a good time to hear about the projects which are already being carried out with STELLA, the projects which are being contemplated, and to think about totally new and exciting projects which can be done with this unique facility.
To this end, we invite everybody to join us for a one day "SCIENCE WITH STELLA AT AIP" workshop to be held at AIP on Friday, November 30'th.
Everyone is welcome.
WORKSHOP FORMAT: We will begin with a brief technical review about the instruments that will become available and their main observing options. There will be an emphasis on where STELLA offers more than existing facilities, in particular on the scheduling of time critical observations. We intend to close the workshop with a general discussion. The main part of the workshop, however, will consist of contributions (10-30min) from institute members who could imagine to obtain data with STELLA. We therefore urge all of you to think about what YOU would like to do with STELLA and seriously consider contributing a short presentation of your favorite "science with STELLA" idea at this workshop.
CONTRIBUTIONS: Presentations should be based on realistic projects but not necessarily developed to the level of detail that you would write up in a proposal. Challenging projects are of course also welcome so we can understand how far STELLA can bring us. This workshop is about stimulating and discussing ideas for science projects with STELLA so even if your are not giving a presentation at the workshop your voice is important in the discussion of the presented projects.
Attention theoreticians! We want YOU as well to contribute ideas about what might be hot issues, that can be resolved observationally with STELLA.
FURTHER INFORMATION: The workshop will be organised by Jesper Storm and Thomas Granzer, as an activity of the Internal Scientific Committee. We will act as a counseling instance for people who could use technical advice when preparing their contribution. Please do not hesitate to contact us. Additional material can be found on the STELLA web site: www.aip.de/stella/
