Research Profile

The main theme of research of R. S. de Jong is observational extragalactic astrophysics. He is in particular interested in the observational aspects of hierarchical galaxy formation and galaxy evolution. Research focus of the past several years has been (1) the age and chemical distribution of resolved stellar populations in nearby disk galaxies, (2) the stellar mass and dynamical structure of disk galaxies, in particular the Milky Way, and (3) development of new instrumentation for massive multi-object spectroscopy over large fields-of-view. He is the initiator and PI of the international GHOSTS survey, with 160+ pointings the largest survey carried out so far with the Hubble Space Telescope to image the resolved stellar populations in the outskirts of nearby, massive disk galaxies. He is also the PI of the 4-metre Multi-Object Spectroscopic Telescope (4MOST), a new spectroscopic survey facility in development for the 4m-class VISTA telescope of ESO.
