Solar activity plays an important role in understanding space weather that affects our technological systems and even influences - on the longer term - the climate on Earth. Several observational techniques are available to study simultaneously  the different atmospheric layers of the Sign, from the photosphere to the corona. We give an overview of these techniques and present results obtained with spectropolarimetry and HELLRIDE, both instruments are located the the observatories at the Canadian Islands.
The observational constraints are in the range below 100 km (spatial resolution) and about 10 s. They come close to theoretical models. New instruments such as the planned EST or DKIST will bring these constraints close to the simulation lattices.
The aim of these studies is to understand and predict solar activity and therefore give a warning to satellite users and communication systems networks in case of enhanced solar activity.
