Understanding the solar dynamo is still a major issue in magnetohydrodynamics. The precise knowledge of the solar activity is a key input to dynamo models. Sunspots have been observed for more than 400 years by telescopes. Old recordings may allow us to reconstruct the properties of the solar activity cycle as well as the differential rotation of the Sun over four centuries. I will show the recent progress in utilizing historical sunspot data and demonstrate their scientific value.
