DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Alessandro Morbidelli (Observatoire de la Cote d&#x27
 \;Azur | Nice\, France)\nTitle: Formation and evolution of a protoplanetar
y disk: combining observations\, simulations and cosmochemical constraints
\nAbstract: Observations of protoplanetary disks with ALMA have revealed a
large diversity of properties\, but also some common tendencies in terms
of dust/gas density and radial extension ratios\, as well as the appearanc
e of features like rings and gaps or cavities. It is too late to observe t
he proto-solar disk\, but many of its properties can be inferred from the
current distribution of planetesimals and using cosmochemical constraints
on the chronology of planetesimal accretion and the isotopic heterogeneity
of the disk. I will review the available data which can be used to recons
truct the proto-solar disk. The view that emerges is that of a quite stand
ard disk of about 90 au in gas radius and 45 au in dust radius\, forming p
lanetesimals at two distinct epochs (one of which very early\, while the d
isk was presumably still in Class-0 or Class-1 stage) and evolving towards
a transition disk at the appearance of Jupiter and Saturn. Similarities a
nd differences with the PDS70 disk will be discussed.\nNote: Host: Oliver

DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Serena Criscuoli (National Solar Observatory | Boulde
r\, CO\, USA)\nTitle: Using Spatially Resolved Solar Observations to Impro
ve Models of Solar and Stellar Variability\nAbstract: Models of solar and
stellar variability are essential for a wide range of applications\, from
understanding the influence of solar irradiance on Earth's atmosphere to c
haracterizing exoplanet host stars and improving the detectability of exop
lanets. Over the past decades\, irradiance variability models have achieve
d considerable success in reproducing many observed signatures of magnetic
activity. However\, important discrepancies remain\, highlighting limitat
ions in our understanding of how different atmospheric structures contribu
te to spectral variability.\nIn this seminar\, I will provide a brief over
view of current solar and stellar variability models\, discussing both the
ir achievements and their outstanding challenges. I will then focus on one
puzzling problem: the variability of the hydrogen Balmer lines. These lin
es\, especially Hα\, Hβ\, Hγ\, and Hδ\, are among the most widely used
diagnostics of stellar magnetic activity\, yet recent observations have r
evealed complex and sometimes unexpected behavior\, including weak or even
anti-correlated variations with traditional chromospheric activity indica
tors such as the Ca II lines.\nI will present recent efforts to understand
the origin of this behavior through a combination of disk-integrated obse
 rvations\, spatially resolved measurements\, and semi-empirical atmospheri
c modeling. I will discuss how modern high-resolution observations enable
us to identify the physical origins of these discrepancies and refine exis
ting models. Particular attention will be given to recent observations acq
uired with the IAG spectrograph and results from the Visible Spectro-Polar
imeter (ViSP) at the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope\, which provide new
insights into the relationship between magnetic activity and Balmer-line v
ariability in the Sun and solar-like stars. Finally\, I will present preli
minary results from an analysis of synoptic ChroTel Hα and Ca II K observ
ations\, which suggest that chromospheric features\, often neglected in cu
rrent solar and stellar irradiance models\, may play a role in shaping chr
 omospheric variability\nNote: Host: Meetu Verma\n

DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Junais (AIP)\nTitle: Low surface brightness galaxies
in the era of deep large-sky surveys and artificial intelligence\nAbstract
: Low surface-brightness (LSB) galaxies\, which are typically fainter than
the night sky\, contribute to the majority of the total number density of
galaxies in the universe. They are a crucial and powerful laboratory for
testing our understanding of galaxy formation and evolution. However\, the
extremely faint nature of these galaxies has long hindered in-depth studi
es of them\, biasing our knowledge of galaxy physics towards only bright\,
massive galaxies. With the advent of new\, powerful instruments capable o
 f carrying out deep\, large sky surveys (e.g.\, Euclid\, LSST)\, combined
with the era of modern artificial intelligence (AI) tools\, we are opening
a new window into a comprehensive understanding of the LSB galaxies. In t
his talk\, I will present our recent and ongoing work on LSB galaxies. Thi
s includes the development of novel AI tools for the automatic identificat
ion and characterisation of LSB and dwarf galaxies\, investigating the rol
e of environment in their evolution\, morphology\, and gas content. Additi
onally\, I will also present some follow-up observing campaigns we did on
extreme cases like ultra-diffuse and giant LSB galaxies.\n

DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Nic Scott (Georgia State University (The CHARA Array)
)\nTitle: Recent technical and scientific highlights from the CHARA Array\
nAbstract: The Center for High Angular Resolution Astronomy (CHARA) Array
is a six-element interferometer at Mount Wilson Observatory with baselines
ranging from 34 to 331 m. The Array hosts a number of new or upgraded\, s
ix-telescope beam combiners that span the spectrum from the visible R-band
to the near-infrared K-band with a range in available spectral resolution
. The most recent are the Silmaril beam combiner that is a three-telescope
instrument for H- and K-bands that is designed for very high sensitivity
on fainter targets and the CHARA Array Integrated Optics Testbed (CHARIOT)
that is a platform for characterizing integrated optic combiners. A seven
th\, mobile telescope is now on-site for use with fiber optics for H-band
beam transport. The mobile telescope will extend the baseline range from 2
0 m to 579 m\, creating new opportunities for measurements of stars with l
arge and small angular diameters. Observing time is available to the commu
nity through a program funded by NSF. The observing programs are solicited
  and peer-reviewed by NSF's NOIRLab.\nAbout Dr. Scott:\nNic Scott is the T
elescope Systems Scientist at the Georgia State University Center for High
Angular Resolution Astronomy (CHARA) Array. Nic directs all aspects of co
ntrol and development of the telescopes\, enclosures\, and relay optics of
the seven CHARA Array telescopes. Nic received dual PhD degrees from Geor
gia State University and the Observatoire de Paris for his work on a novel
fiber optics beam combiner at the Array. Prior to his current appointment
at CHARA\, Nic was a Lead Research Scientist at the NASA Ames Research Ce
nter where he developed speckle interferometry cameras for the WIYN\, Gemi
ni-North\, and Gemini-South telescopes. Nic is currently leading the integ
ration of the CHARA Array Integrated Optics Testbed (CHARIOT) experiment t
o provide a flexible station in the beam combining laboratory to character
ize novel integrated optics combiners.\nNote: Let me know if you want to m

DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Geraint Lewis (University of Sydney)\nTitle: Confront
ing the Cosmological Principle: How secure are the foundations of the cosm
os?\nAbstract: For nearly a century\, the cosmological principle has been
the bedrock of our understanding of the universe. But what if this foundat
ion is starting to crack? In this talk\, I describe how we have used quasa
rs and radio galaxies to test the assumption that the cosmos is isotropic
and homogeneous. We know that the Cosmic Microwave Background displays a s
trong dipole\, attributed to our motion relative to the local Hubble flow\
, and if this motion truly defines our cosmic frame\, its imprint should a
ppear elsewhere. Indeed\, we find a dipole in large-scale surveys of cosmo
logical sources\, and whilst the direction agrees\, the amplitude does no
t\, diverging sharply from expectations based on the CMB. I will explore p
ossible explanations for these tensions and ask whether they signal new ph
ysics or a fundamental shift in our cosmological worldview.\n

DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Oliver Gressel (AIP)\nTitle: Magnetic phenomena in pr
otoplanetary discs\nAbstract: Advances in global magnetohydrodynamic (MHD)
simulations along with radiative-chemical modelling have greatly promoted
our understanding of protoplanetary discs. With few exceptions\, magnetic
fields are playing a pivotal role. The evolutionary processes are general
ly found to depend sensitively on the overall amplitude of the large-scale
magnetic flux. This mandates to follow the magnetic flux evolution in tan
dem with the non-ideal plasma effects. In the context of planet-formation
theories\, our models can serve as the backdrop for population synthesis
 – governing the growth as well as orbital migration of the evolving plan
 ets\, and discerning in-situ from ex-situ formation pathways.\n
