21 November | Starry Night in Babelsberg
The Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP) invites to the next Starry Night in Babelsberg on Thursday, 21 November 2019, starting at 7:15 pm with a public lecture of Professor Katja Poppenhäger on "Other worlds: A guided tour of the exoplanet zoo". Please note that the lecture will be given in German.
New season of Starry Nights in Babelsberg starts
On Thursday, 17 October 2019, starting at 7:15 pm, the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP) invites to the start of the new season of our Starry Nights in Babelsberg. Christian Thomas, research assistant at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, will give a public lecture on the topic "Astronomy in Alexander von Humboldt's Cosmos lectures". Please note that the lecture will be given in German.
Wempe Award for Elisabeth Newton
24 September 2019. In recognition of her outstanding research on the rotation and magnetism of low-mass stars, the Johann Wempe Foundation is honoring Prof. Dr. Elisabeth Newton of Dartmouth College, USA, with the Wempe Award. The ceremony will take place on 26 September 2019, starting at 3:00 pm at the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP) in Babelsberg.
16th Potsdam Thinkshop: The rotation periods of cool stars
From the 23rd to the 26th of September, more than 50 scientists meet at the 16th Potsdam Thinkshop on AIP’s campus in Babelsberg, Potsdam, Germany. Each year, the event series of the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP) focuses on a different field of astrophysical research. This year, the topic is the rotation of stars, the study of which provides new insights into their behavior beyond the classical measures of distance and brightness.
The Sun and the Inner Heliosphere – Radio Astronomy Conference CESRA in Potsdam
In the week from 8 to 12 July 2019, the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP) is hosting a conference on the exploration of solar activity by means of radio emissions and their effects on our Earth. At Telegrafenberg Potsdam, about 100 scientists will discuss their latest research results and the expected findings of the current space missions to the Sun.

A look into the cosmos: Long Night of the Sciences 2019
The Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP) takes part in the Long Night of the Sciences, which takes place on June 15, 2019 from 5 pm to midnight. The AIP opens its scientific-historical sites on the Telegrafenberg: the Great Refractor and the Einstein Tower. The program ranges from exciting lectures about current astrophysical research to observation with the historical telescope.
Dutch royal couple visits Telegrafenberg
22 May 2019. His Majesty King Willem-Alexander and Her Majesty Queen Máxima of the Netherlands today visited the Great Refractor of the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP) at the Albert Einstein Science Park on the Telegrafenberg accompanied by a high-ranking German-Dutch delegation.
AIP successful in European contest for knowledge and technology transfer
April 8 2019, updated 22 May 2019. From galaxy research to the fight against cancer – the research and innovation center innoFSPEC, part of the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP), receives funding by the European Commission for the development of pioneering technology for economy and society. Today's kick-off meeting at CERN in Geneva marked the start of the one-year funding period for all 170 projects funded under the ATTRACT research and innovation project.

Girls' Day/Future Day 2019
On March 28, 2019, the Future Day will take place once again. On this nationwide day of action, female students from the 5th grade onwards have the opportunity to gain insight into occupational fields in which women are underrepresented. The Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP) opens its doors on this day.

Symposium on the Milky Way receives Potsdam Conference Award
28 February 2019. On the evening of February 28, the Potsdam Conference Award was awarded for the seventh time. The IAU symposium "Rediscovering our Galaxy" hosted by the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP) won the award in the category "Single Events" and the special award for using innovative technologies.

Disentangling starlight
31 January 2019. Although they look like fuzzy patches of light, distant galaxies are actually made up of billions of stars and other astronomical objects. Telescopes are rarely powerful enough to study individual stars in galaxies except for those closest to the Milky Way, but a team of scientists has now used the MUSE instrument on ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) to resolve the stars in the spiral galaxy NGC 300.

Astronomy in the European Open Science Cloud
20 November 2018. First quarter 2019 sees the exciting launch of ESCAPE, one out of the five successfully retained Cluster projects, which the European Commission supports with €16 million to boost the implementation of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). The Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP) will develop a classification engine which automatically identifies, classifies, and provides physical properties of solar and stellar atmospheres.
IAU Symposium 354: Magnetfelder der Sonne und der Sterne
The Leibniz-Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP) and the New Jersey Institute of Technology jointly invite to a symposium of the International Astronomical Union. It will be taking place during the total solar eclipse in Chile in summer 2019. Its topic is one of AIPs central scientific interests: solar and stellar magnetic fields.
