ERC Consolidator Grant for Maria-Rosa Cioni

Credit: AIPThe European Research Council (ERC) announced Prof. Dr. Maria-Rosa Cioni to be winner of one of the ERC Consolidator Grants worth 2 million Euros. ERC Consolidator Grants are awarded to outstanding researchers once a year.
Maria-Rosa Cioni will set up an independent research group to investigate the interaction between galaxies. Her goal is to offer a firm perspective of the Magellanic Clouds by providing a very first comprehensive analysis of their internal motion, orbital history, and geometry. These dwarf galaxies are in the neighbourhood of the Milky Way and are supplementing material to the halo. Cioni and her team will start in October 2016 to analyse the stellar content of the galaxies, to dissect the substructures that are related to their accretion history and to their interaction with the Milky Way. This study will make use of multi-wavelength observations (e.g. from the VISTA survey of the Magellanic Clouds and from Gaia) and the development of theoretical models.
After graduating in astronomy from the University of Bologna (Italy) in 1996, Maria-Rosa Cioni obtained her PhD degree in astronomy at the University of Leiden (The Netherlands) in 2001. She was an ESO fellow in Garching from 2001 to 2005 and then a lecturer at the University of Edinburgh (UK) until 2007. Then, she moved to the University of Hertfordshire (UK) as a Senior Lecturer where she was recently promoted to Reader in Astronomy. She returned to Germany with a Humboldt Fellowship for experienced researchers in 2010. At present, she is DAAD visiting Professor at the University of Potsdam and a guest researcher at the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP). Since 2015, Cioni is the German representative in the ESO Users Committee.
The European Research Council (ERC) funds projects of outstanding scientists with seven to twelve years of experience since completion of their PhD. Two principles distinguish the funding procedure: excellence as the sole funding criterion plus an independent and transparent peer review process. The funding of maximum of two million Euros per grant is provided for up to five years.
