Ivan Minchev, Astronomer at the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP), is awarded the Ludwig Biermann Award of the German Astronomical Society (Astronomische Gesellschaft, AG). The award ceremony takes place in Kiel on September 15, 2015.

Minchev completed his PhD at the University of Rochester in the US, followed by a postdoc at Strasbourg Observatory in France. Since 2010 Minchev works in the research group “Milky Way and the Local Volume“ at the AIP. His research is focused on the formation and evolution of galaxies and chemo-dynamic models. The AG honors Minchev for his outstanding research on galactic dynamics.

The Ludwig Biermann Award was established in 1989 by the Astronomische Gesellschaft to be awarded in recognition of outstanding young astronomers. The award consists of financing a scientific stay at an institution of the recipient's choice. It is named after the astronomer Ludwig Biermann (1907-1986).

The German Astronomical Society (Astronomische Gesellschaft, AG) aims to promote astrophysical research. Prof. Dr. Matthias Steinmetz, Chairman of the AIP Executive Board, is also President of the AG and Chair of the Council of German Observatories (Rat Deutscher Sternwarten, RDS).

The key areas of research at the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP) are cosmic magnetic fields and extragalactic astrophysics. A considerable part of the institute's efforts aims at the development of research technology in the fields of spectroscopy, robotic telescopes, and E-science. The AIP is the successor of the Berlin Observatory founded in 1700 and of the Astrophysical Observatory of Potsdam founded in 1874. The latter was the world's first observatory to emphasize explicitly the research area of astrophysics. The AIP has been a member of the Leibniz Association since 1992.
