Title: The Circumgalactic Medium - Insights on gas distribution and structure from observations and simulations

Abstract: Understanding gas flows in and out of galaxies through the Circum-Galactic Medium (CGM) is crucial to studies of galaxy evolution. Yet, direct observations of the CGM remain challenging as this medium is intrinsically thin and faint. The currently most efficient approach is to detect this diffuse gas in absorption towards bright background quasars and link it to a galaxy counterpart. While this approach lets us investigate average CGM properties, it is usually limited to a single sightline. We need maps of the CGM gas to fully characterize its distribution and small-scale structure. Additionally, we need to have a theoretical understanding of the CGM small-scale structure and its impact on observables. I will present recent results from observing galaxy counterparts of strong HI absorbers as well as ongoing efforts of mapping the CGM in absorption using IFU observations of multiple background sources. I will also share insights about the CGM small-scale structure from high resolution cosmological zoom-in simulations.
