Title: There’s nothing peculiar about a galaxy’s velocity

Abstract: I will give a fairly general talk on how (some) astronomers measure distances to (certain) celestial objects. More importantly I will review the utility of such measurements, namely their purposes in deriving peculiar velocities, understanding the scale of the universe and building a consistent picture of the cosmos, including making cosmological maps. A history of peculiar velocities, the elusiveness and challenge of their observation, and their implications for our understanding the fundamental fabric of our Universe will be explained. I will end with how these measurements play a role in cosmological simulations of the local universe, and how such simulations can help us understand the formation of our own galaxy.
