DevOps position for the 4MOST public archive
The Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP) is dedicated to astrophysical questions ranging from the study of our sun to the development of the cosmos. Research focuses on cosmic magnetic fields and extragalactic astrophysics as well as the development of research technologies in the fields of spectroscopy, robotic telescopes and e-science. The AIP carries out its research mission within the framework of numerous national, European and international collaborations. The institute is the successor to the Berlin Observatory, founded in 1700, and the Astrophysical Observatory Potsdam, founded in 1874, which was the first institute in the world to dedicate itself explicitly to astrophysics. The AIP has been a member of the Leibniz Association since 1992. Around 200 employees work at our location in the middle of a beautiful park landscape in Potsdam, not far from Berlin.
To strengthen the group Research Data Infrastructure we are hiring a
DevOps position for the 4MOST public archive
Your tasks
4MOST is a new multi-object spectrograph built for and delivered to the European Southern Observatory. It will deliver 50 million spectra over the next 5 years. Spectra and advanced data products are made available through the 4MOST Public Archive (4PA) based at AIP. The main focus of the position is on the support required to deliver the first and second data releases of the 4MOST project, in particular
- maintenance and further development of the 4PA web front-end,
- ingestion of data release candidates into the archive database, with special focus on the data release description.
- contribution to the development of architecture and software stack behind the archive.
Your skills
- Programming and IT skills, preferably with experience in natural sciences / astrophysics.
- Specific expertise in Python, Linux, and structured programming development are required.
- Experience in web front-end development is appreciated.
- SQL, Django and Docker knowledge are an advantage,
- Familiarity with astronomical spectroscopic data is an asset.
- A university degree (M.Sc., PhD) is required.
- Project language is English, thus good command of English language is required.

The position is to be filled for a three-years term. The position is suitable for part-time work. Start date is negotiable, target time is fall 2026.
