The Dutch have an odd dislike for credit cards and you will find that, outside of the main tourist areas of Amsterdam and environs, credit cards are not usually accepted, including in some hotels and other large establishments.  Debit cards, in the form of Maestro only, are accepted throughout the Netherlands.

There is no ticket office at the train stations of Hoogeveen and Beilen.  Ticket machines are available, but these accept only Maestro and cash coins (not notes).  Tickets may be purchased in advance, using common debit/credit cards, and printed at home by using the *Belgian* railway's website: For train timetables and connections, please use

ASTRON is situated in the Dutch countryside and your own transport may be necessary to get between your hotel and ASTRON, depending on where your hotel is.  Bicycles are very cheap to hire (your hotel will be able to arrange this) and cycling in the area is both easy and pleasant, with the main village of Dwingeloo only 10 minutes away.  Please only use a car for travel between hotel and ASTRON if it is strictly necessary.
