The Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP) received the certificate from “berufundfamilie gGmbH”. The award highlights the efforts of AIP as a family-friendly employer in Brandenburg.

The “berufundfamilie gGmbH” audit confirmed that AIP portrays an active and conscious commitment to the compatibility of family and career within a non-university specialized research setting. Under the moderation of the “berufundfamilie gGmbH”, a team of employees developed strategies and measures, allowing AIP to further strengthen family-related themes in the future, such as equal opportunity, family-friendly work times, parent-child-workplaces or emergency childcare. To accomplish this, representatives of the institute and the “berufundfamilie gGmbH” staffs reached an agreement on objectives. These objectives need to be accomplished within the next three years to prove in the re-audit in 2017 that the agreed upon measures have been implemented on an ongoing basis.

The “berufundfamilie gGmbH” was founded by the Hertie-foundation and is supported by the Bundesministerium für Familie, Senioren, Frauen und Jugend (Ministry for Family, Seniors, Women and Youth).

The key areas of research at the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP) are cosmic magnetic fields and extragalactic astrophysics. A considerable part of the institute's efforts aims at the development of research technology in the fields of spectroscopy, robotic telescopes, and E-science. The AIP is the successor of the Berlin Observatory founded in 1700 and of the Astrophysical Observatory of Potsdam founded in 1874. The latter was the world's first observatory to emphasize explicitly the research area of astrophysics. The AIP has been a member of the Leibniz Association since 1992.
