On 12 August, the Long Night of Astronomy invites to Tempelhofer Feld in Berlin from 5 pm to 1 am. The event not only gives visitors the opportunity to admire the Perseids meteor stream together, but also presents a colourful programme for the whole family.

Whether it's celestial observations with telescopes, guided tours of constellations, science slam, live music, craft stations for children or the mobile planetarium INTENSE, there will be something for everyone.

Of course, the highlight of the evening remains the shooting star observation. On the night of Saturday 12 to Sunday 13 August, up to 100 shooting stars per hour are expected. The AIP will join the event and offer observations with a telescope and present a booth from 7pm.

The Event is a part of the Berlin 2023 Cultural Summer Festival is presented by the Stiftung Planetarium Berlin, amateur astronomers as well as astronomical promotion associations. The Long night of Astronomy celebrates it`s 10th anniversary this year and is, as always, free of charge. The venue changes annually. The key areas of research at the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP) are cosmic magnetic fields and extragalactic astrophysics. A considerable part of the institute's efforts aims at the development of research technology in the fields of spectroscopy, robotic telescopes, and E-science. The AIP is the successor of the Berlin Observatory founded in 1700 and of the Astrophysical Observatory of Potsdam founded in 1874. The latter was the world's first observatory to emphasize explicitly the research area of astrophysics. The AIP has been a member of the Leibniz Association since 1992.
