Website Documentation

On these pages the most important information for editors of the website are being collected. If you have any questions or problems, please contact webmaster@aip.de.

Please note: The old website (pages in Plone CMS) are now only available via the URL archiv.aip.de/2022/ from the internal AIP network. If you need information from these pages on the current website, please move its content or let me know.

General information

The content management system used for the website is called Wagtail and is based on the Django framework. In the Wagtail documentation there is a Wagtail Editor's guide, but it is only partially applicable, since the Wagtail installation here is adapted to the AIP.

The page structure in the admin interface is basically the same as the structure of the website. Each page can have its own subpages, see Creating and adding pages.

When editing pages, fields and blocks are filled, which are displayed on the website according to a predefined template. Therefore the appearance of a page in the admin interface does not necessarily correspond to the actual appearance of the published page. Editors can therefore concentrate more on the content and less on the design of the page.

  • Log in with your AIP account username and password. This is the same login data as for your Windows, Eduroam or WLAN account. The "Login" link is located in the upper right corner of each page.
  • After login, click on the cogwheel icon in the lower right corner to enter the Wagtail Admin Interface. If you are on a page for which you have editing rights, you can also click directly on the gear icon to 'Edit this page'.
  • If you forgot your password, please contact the IT section.

Multiple languages

The website provides content in German and English. To make it easier to keep the content in both languages as up-to-date as possible, all text modules are provided directly on one page in German and English. The language switch, so that only the German or English text is displayed on the published page, is done automatically.

At least the German and English title of the page must be specified for each page before the page can be saved.

Website contents

One could distinguish three types of content for the website:

  • automatically generated content:
This includes publication and employee lists, for example. These are automatically generated and displayed at the given position (e.g. on the section pages). They are found as separate menu entries in the main admin menu.
    • Publications: are pulled by the NASA ADS, searching for publications whose authors have indicated the AIP as 'affiliation'. If you miss your publication, please make sure that you have entered the correct name of the institute and contact webmaster@aip.de. Additional ADS libraries can be linked on staff and project pages.
    • Member information: will be synchronized from the intranet. This is based on the central AIP accounts (=Windows accounts), which are managed by IT. Anyone who no longer has an AIP account will no longer appear on any member lists.
  • centrally defined objects:
There are some objects that are created and edited centrally in the admin interface of the website:
    • research projects: These can be created and edited by section heads and additionally permitted users. They are displayed on the research project page as well as with the specified participating sections.
    • completed theses of students: can be created by section heads as well, are found at ‚Publications‘ -> ‚Theses‘. They are shown on the publication page of a section.
    • thesis topics: possible supervisors with topics and specific master, bachelor or PhD thesis projects can be defined by section/groups heads via the admin menu 'Thesis Topics'
    • section members: The section and group heads can now also update the status groups of their section/group members and add entries for long-term guests (cooperations).
    • calendar events: The authorization to create and edit calendar events can be obtained from the webmaster (webmaster@aip.de).
    • job offers: These are only posted by the webmaster after approval by the equal opportunities officer. They will automatically no longer be displayed on the website after their expiration date.
  • texts, images, documents, links, etc. set by editors of the website
These contents are created by editors of the website directly on the pages. This is mainly done by text and image blocks. For text blocks, the editor "Draftail" is used. Documentation including allowed keyboard shortcuts can be found here: Draftail User guide. It is also possible to copy texts (including links) from other web pages or from a Word document and paste them into text boxes (Ctrl+V). The Draftail Editor is often clever enough to automatically detect formatting and display it accordingly.
More about page types and blocks can be found on the documentation page Page types and blocks.
