Page types and blocks

If you create a sub-page, you can choose between different page types. The most sensible is usually the page type 'standard page'. These and some other frequently occurring page types are briefly introduced here.

Standard page

This is the most commonly used page type. It provides several content blocks, some of which also appear in other page types and will be briefly described here. In addition, the standard page contains extensive functions for an optional sidebar with navigation menu.

Text

The text block contains a RichText editor area for English and one for German text. Headings, text sections, lists etc. can be entered here. If an image block has been defined beforehand, the text flows around the image if it is long enough.

Links to other internal pages and external links can be inserted via the link symbol. Page links are automatically translated into the appropriate language by the CMS.

Documents can be selected or uploaded via the document icon.

Picture

Details on how to insert images using the image block are described on the page Images.

Break

The break block can be used to end a paragraph. Technically, this block ends the flow around preceding float elements. Subsequent texts, pictures, etc. start again on the left-hand side (unless they are arranged differently).

Subpage list

This block inserts a list of links to subpages of the current page. The subpages are automatically added and updated (provided they are published and their 'Show in menus' option is enabled). The order of the subpages corresponds to the menu order, which can be adjusted with the 'Sort' option in the Wagtail admin (see Navigation Menus).

Additionally, the option 'Show short descriptions' can be ticked, which shows the short description of each subpage below the title, if the subpage supports this option. These short descriptions can be entered on each standard page at the tab 'Configuration'.

Table

If possible, tables should not be used at all, as they cannot be displayed well on mobile devices. Therefore, only a rudimentary table function is available here: the table supports neither links nor images. In most cases, lists are the better display alternative. If you still need a complex table, you can define your own table using an HTML block, if you really need to. If more complex data objects are to be displayed, it may make sense to define separate objects in the web app. Please contact your webmaster for this.

HTML

If the content cannot be displayed in any other way, an HTML block can be used in exceptional cases. Here, too, a German and English text field is available in which the HTML text can be entered. If you need to use this block frequently, please contact the webmaster at webmaster@aip.de to see if there is another possibility or if a new feature is needed for the website.

Link page

In principle, navigation menus can only contain links to subpages of a page. With a 'Link page' you can add an additional navigation menu entry to an external page of a link to an internal page that is not a subpage of the current page.

Section page

All section pages are already created.

The following page types can be selected specifically as subpages for section pages:

  • Section page
    • is used for group pages (e.g. Ggroup X-ray Astronomy as subpage for section Galaxies); please use it only for official groups according to the organisational structure chart.
  • Section members page
    • The members and their contact details are automatically loaded from the database. A team photo can be added here, as well as further text at the bottom of the page (e.g. former staff members).
  • Publication page
    • Up to 3 content types are displayed here:
      • Staff list with links to ADS libraries, only for staff members who have added an ADS link to their profile page.
      • 10 most recent publications from the ADS with authors who are members of this section/group
      • Final theses of students, if there are any that are assigned to this section
  • Research page
    • Contains research topics, usually as topic blocks with picture and short text.
  • News overview page
    • If desired, section-specific news can be posted via this page. To do this, one (and only one) news overview page must first be created. All section news will then be created as subpages of the news overview page. Please also pay attention to German and English texts here (they are quickly done translation tools like e.g. deepl.com and reach a wider audience).

Member page

Each member of the institute gets his/her own member page, that can be edited by everyone him/herself. Details on how to do that are explained on the documentation page Contact data and member page.
