Galaxies in the Local Universe

The nearby galaxies are relatively bright and large on the sky. This means they can be resolved into subcomponents and observed with integral-field spectrographs. Moreover, it is possible to obtaining spatial information about morphology, kinematics, dynamics and chemistry of their constituents: stars, gas and dust. These characteristics are of crucial importance for discovering and understanding the physical processes that form and participate in the subsequent evolution of galaxies along cosmic history.
